Highly prized by the most ancient civilizations right up to our day, gold is also one of the most used metals to craft into your favorite pieces of jewellery.
From 24 to 10, perhaps you have wondered which karat is ideal. The simple answer is; it largely depends on what type of jewellery you are looking to purchase.
The wonderful thing is, we are here to break it down for you!
24 karat gold is pure gold.
24 Karat Gold
Meaning all 24 parts of the metal itself are gold. A naturally soft metal, pure gold is not ideal for crafting into jewellery. Therefore, it is rare to find pure gold jewellery commercially.
18 Karat Gold
18 karat gold is comprised of 75% gold and 25% alloy (metal). This karat is more durable and very attractive in colour, however it can scratch easily and is generally more expensive. We recommend investing in this karat for earrings, necklaces and pendants.
14 Karat Gold
14 karat gold comes in as the most popular karat. Comprised of 58.3% gold and 41.7% alloy, this karat is strong and more durable then 18 karat, therefore it has been the choice for jewellery such as bangles, earrings, rings, and chains.
Bright in colour yet more affordable than higher karats, it is easily a consumer favorite. We recommend this karat for wedding and engagement rings as the percentage of gold is higher than alloy, beautiful and will do justice to your precious gemstones.
10 Karat Gold
10 karat gold is comprised of 41.7% gold and 58.3% alloy. With a composition that is more alloy than gold, this karat is the strongest of all above, well suited to crafting rings, chains and earrings. Although it is a tad lighter in colour than higher karats, many actually prefer its more muted tone, not to mention it’s more affordable.
